Recent user feedback
Saturday, 19 November 2016
Ever so often we like to share some of our user feedback. Here's a few recent comments :- Your service is efficient and easy to access for a general webmaster.
- Thank you for making it soooo easy for me to generate a Sitemap for my website. I'm a novice when it comes to website creation. I'm learning to do it all myself. Google said that it was a great idea for me to give them a sitemap for my website, but I had no idea how to do that. You made that simple for me to do and I am so very grateful. Great job!!
- Liked the simplicity of use and accuracy.
- XML sitemap generator was fast and super helpful- exactly what I needed. I got my new website's site maps emailed to me within 24 hours, which was great, and there's no fee , just donations optional. I'm very grateful for the help, and that XML doesn't automatically charge a fee (I will be donating- the assortment of sitemaps is worth it!) Thank you! I'm new to website design and couldnt have built a sitemap myself- I appreciate it!
- Very accurate and an efficient use of my time with the email notification. A great service.
- Great service that really makes my life as a web master a whole lot easier. I love the variety in options and the fact that I get an email notification whenever my sitemap is done.
- Correct and complete sitemap generation. Good job.
- The generator worked perfect and gave also a usefull site error report
- Хороший, быстрый, а главное - бесплатный генератор sitemap. Рекомендую!
- I have a website with about 200 pages which is constantly being updated with new content. This sitemap generator was fast and accurate. Great tool for webmasters!
- This was a great solution for me, since I just started working on the website and have just started learning how to use xml. Saved me a lot of time. Definitely worth using and contributing a donation.
- In contrast to many other "free" service, this one provides a convenient user interface and doesn't seem to have any limitations regarding the number of scanned pages. That's really great, especially for non-commercial projects, that can't afford to pay such a service immediately. Wish there would be more services made with that spirit out there. I will suggest a small donation for this project, all the best for you guys!
If you find our sitemap generator service useful and want to comment or donate please feel free to do so, it's what keeps the service going.
Thanks for all your support!

Our best Wordpress sitemap plugin yet
Saturday, 10 September 2016
It's been a while since we updated our sitemap generator plugin for wordpress so we were pleased to be able to announce version 1.3.0 being ready for general release earlier this week. We've always prided ourselves on being the best Wordpress Sitemap plugin when it comes to flexibility including :
- Supporting HTML, RSS and Google XML Sitemap formats.
- Setting defaults individually for Pages, Posts, Archives, Authors, Categories and Tags.
- Being able to configure settings for individual Pages, Posts, Categories and Tags.
Having listened to what our users have been asking for we have now added to important features by popular demand.
Support for custom posts.
We now give you the same great flexibility for all your custom post types. Whether projects, products, property or something else you get the same ability to configure global defaults and then change settings at the individual page/post level.
This gives you comprehensive control of our sitemap and the ability to tweak your sitemap SEO (Search engine optimisation) strategy right down to the page level across your entire website, highlighting important pages to search engines.
Customise robots file
Whilst there were other plugins that enabled you to edit your robots.txt file they often overwrote entries produced by other plugins. For example we add your sitemap to your robots.txt file and custom robots.txt plugins typically overwrite this.
So now we have added the ability for you to add custom entries to your robots file via our plugin. It honours everything added by our plugin and other plugins and allows you to insert your own entries.
What's next
We hope you find these new features useful.
Please help support us in whatever way you can whether by sharing , donating or just feeding back, it all helps make our Wordpress sitemap plugin the best sitemap plugin for you our users.
We genuinely want to hear from you and become the best Wordpress Sitemap Plugin for all our users, giving them all the features they need to optimise their Wordpress SEO (Search engine optimisation).
Get the plugin or find out which of our sitemap generator is best for you.

Latest online sitmap updates
Monday, 5 September 2016
Over the last month or so we've been making some tweaks and changes to our sitemap generator website.New : Upgraded website to Zurb Foundation 6
New : Improved website performance
New : Minor cosmetic / content updates to our website
Fix : Sitemap Image url issue.
Fix : Contact us form issue
Fix : Donate form
New : More reliable email notifications
We also made one of the last changes to our infrastructure separating out the email server to use Microsoft Exchange online. This has improved email delivery and reduced the number of emails being flagged as spam which in turn means you get more reliable notifications when your sitemap is ready.
New : Reintroduced captcha
Whilst the captcha can be frustrating to some people, when we removed it our service became stressed by spam bots submitting requests, tying up resources and impacting performance for real users. So whilst not ideal it is a necessary evil to ensure real users get a better service.

Troubleshooting your Wordpress sitemap plugin
Monday, 20 June 2016
In this article we'll give you a few tips and tricks to help you with problems that some users face when trying to get up and running with our WordPress Sitemap Generator Plugin. Please note that changing your WordPress settings can have undesirable consequences and can impact on your SEO or even take your site offline. Ensure you back up regularly and if in doubt ask an expert.
Wordpress / Plugin versions
Make sure you have the latest version of our Wordpress plugin and Wordpress itself is up to date. This will ensure any known issues are addressed and is important to ensure you have the latest and most secure version. We also don't tend to test / support older version of Wordpress.
Permalinks
Our sitemap generator doesn't work when you have permalinks set to "Plain". To check your permalinks select settings from the main menu and then permalinks.

User interface / settings issues
Other plugins can sometimes interfere with our code. This can manifest as user interface and functional problems. We've tried to prevent this but haven't ruled it out 100%.
You can try to debug this by temporally deactivating plugins to determine which is causing the problem. If you don't need the plugin leave it deactivated and get in touch with details so we can try to fix the issue.
Invalid XML format
As with user interface problems invalid XML can be caused by other plugins injecting content in to our sitemap. This can cause problems which may manifest as invalid XML.
Again you can narrow this down by temporally deactivating plugins to determine which is causing the problem. Please get in touch with details so we can try to fix the issue.
Another problem can be if debugging is enabled and debug information is being written in to your sitemap. Switching off debugging usually resolves this. If the debug information is a result of our plugin please let us know the details so we can investigate.
Custom posts
At present our plugin does not support custom post types or any other customised content. This is something we are looking in to. If the missing page is a custom type it will not show in your sitemap.
Caching
Sometimes the problem can be something simple like your browser cached the sitemap file (/xmlsitemap.xml). You can try forcing a refresh using CTRL+F5 or opening it in a private / incognito browser window.
If you use a caching plugin these too can prevent your sitemap updating immediately. You can test this by temporarily deactivating your caching plugin. In normal circumstances you may need to just wait for your cache to expire or manually reset/flush the cache.
Remember that if you do use caching you'll need to force a refresh after any further changes.
Global settings
The default global settings should enable you to produce a sitemap with all your content. If you have changed these check you are not excluding any areas of your website that you expect to be included.
![]() |
Wordpress sitemap global settings |
Pages settings
Your pages / posts must be published and publicly available i.e. not a draft and no password protection.
It sounds obvious, but also make sure you are looking for the correct post url.
Check the XML Sitemap panel to ensure that the pages/post is not set to exclude.
![]() |
WordPress Post settings |
Category / tag settings
If that doesn't resolve your issue check what categories / tags are assigned to your post and make sure that the category / tag settings are not set to exclude.
![]() |
WordPress Tag sitemap settings |
Still got a problem?
If you changed any settings it might be worth trying to force a refresh again using CTRL+F5.
If you still have a problem please get in touch providing as much detail as possible about your setup and steps to replicate the problem and we'll try to help if we can.

Website diagnostic tool
Monday, 30 May 2016
We sometimes get contacted by people with questions about why their sitemap wasn't generated as expected , indeed in some cases returning very few or no pages. In most cases the answers are to do with the structure or format of their website and how it responds to our spider.
To help users understand and address these problems we've started to automate some standard checks we should normally do manually to help resolve these issues.
The diagnostic tool runs through a series of tests designed to mimic the behaviour of our spider.
We test things like
- Accessing your server
- The server response codes
- Parsing of the HTML content
- Important tags such as
- titles and headers
- canonical urls and
- http refresh
- Number of urls found
![]() |
Exampe diagnostics output |
You can access the diagnostic tool when you download your sitemap and from the help section.
In this release we also fixed a couple of bugs.
- Fix: processing of http equivelent refresh meta tag.
- Fix : noindex / nofollow rules to ensure pages that we're not indexed we're still followed where there wasn't a nofollow value.

Sitemap Infrastructure Upgrade
Monday, 16 May 2016
On the 16th April our hosting provider 123-reg made a catastrophic blunder deleting 100's of customer virtual servers. They have since been unable to recover the servers and many reported permanent loss of data. You can read more about the outage and how it unfolded on our previous blog and on the BBC news website.Having been through a rocky period we are pleased to say that we are now coming out the other side of the disaster having relocated our services to Microsoft Azure.
Our previous setup
Our previous setup with 123-reg gave us limited options in terms of resilience and scalability. We essentially hosted the service on a number of manually managed Virtual Private servers using rudimentary backup provision provided by 123-reg.
![]() |
A simplified view of our 123reg hosting setup |
Our setup with 123reg setup was in a single UK data centre with basic hosting facilities, giving rise to a number of challenges including:
- Difficult abstract and manage key services
- No guaranteed fault domains
- Problematic load balancing
- Very limited backup options
- Labour intensive manual scale
- Lack of performance and security management
Our Microsoft Azure setup
Our new Azure setup has allowed us to easily abstract the various components and services and host them in much more resilient environments, with automatic redundancy/failover and much more opportunity to scale.
Azure allows us to host services around the globe at the click of a button. In the first instance we have provisioned our primary services in the Western Europe Azure region which provides a good central operating base.
![]() |
An overview of our Azure setup |
We now have a dedicated load balancer fronting the service allowing us to better manage traffic across a number of server nodes and deal with maintenance and updates much more transparently.
The servers themselves sit in separate fault domains meaning they do not depend on the same infrastructure should a fault occur.
We're also able to take server snapshots and scale out servers up and out should we need to meet peaks and troughs in demand. This can even be done automatically in real time!
Azure has enabled us to easily abstracted our file and database services to dedicated managed backends with inherent resilience, fault domains and automated backups.
Azure also affords us an awesome set of tools including application insights, performance and security monitoring enabling us to proactively manage the server.
What's next
As the service beds in we hope to tune and optimise the service further so there may be a few further bumps along the way, but ultimately we hope to provide a more stable platform.
With Azure being a flexible global platform our ability to scale and deliver compute power where it is needed to reduce network latency becomes a real possibility. We hope to be able to improve and expand the service further in the future as budget and resources permit.
We appreciate all the support and offers of help we received during this problematic period and would encourage you if possible to please contribute and help use keep sitemaps free.

We're slowly getting back online
Wednesday, 27 April 2016
On the 16th April our hosting provider 123-reg made a catastrophic blunder deleting 100's of customer virtual servers. They have since been unable to recover the servers and many reported permanent loss of data. This has left ourselves and many others having to manually reinstate server infrastructure and recover from file backups. As a very small operation that relies on community donations this resource intensive recovery operation hit us hard and taken time and money to recover.
You can read more about the outage and how it unfolded on our previous blog and on the BBC news website.
We sincerely apologise for this inconvenience as we know we have a great user community who rely on our services, but the good news is we're now starting to get back online and in the process of stabilising our services.
Over the next few days DNS changes will propagate and hopefully you will be able to use our service again.
In light of this incident and the problems restoring the service we are taking a number of actions to add more resilience to the service which will include software and infrastructure changes.
We will be announcing more about these shortly.
Sorry again for the inconvenience and thanks for bearing with us.

Major hosting outage - 123reg
Saturday, 16 April 2016
Since early morning (GMT) April 16th 2016 our hosting provider 123reg has been experiencing a major outage. There was little communication on the matter and no information on the nature of the problem. It later transpired that as part of a catastrophic blunder 123-reg accidentally deleted 100's of virtual servers. This serious incident is hitting many businesses hard and is being covered by various major UK news channels including BBC News online.
Affected services
This means XmlSitemapGenerator.org and G-mapper.co.uk are currently offline.
This does not impact the use of our Wordpress plugin or G-Mapper software itelf.
At this time the outage has been for over 24 hours and it has been over 12 hours since we received any update. Looking at social media this seems to be affecting many 100's if not 1000's of customers. Some customers are reporting that this is one in a series of recent major failings.
Resolution time
We are hoping that 123reg will restore their service and we will come back online, however given the lack of information we are concerned that there has been a more catastrophic or malicious event.
In the event that services are not automatically recovered we will need to migrate to restore the service to new servers so we envisage a prolonged outage that will last a further number of days.
We will update on this as and when the situation becomes clearer.
Further updates
We know that every day 100's of users and their websites depend on our services, so we will of course be reviewing our hosting arrangements as a result of this incident and the appalling communications from 123Reg.
We apologise for the inconvenience and we hope that service will resume soon.
To stay up to date please watch twitter and our facebook page.
Update 17:00 GMT 17th April 2016
123reg are reporting they have accidentally deleted their customers virtual servers and are talking about data being lost. They are talking about a recovery time of about 24 hours, however it remains unclear to that extent the serivce will be restored and what further work will be required.
Update 08:00 GMT 18th April 2016
It has now been 48 hours since the outage began. There is no further information from 123reg our hosting provider. Unfortunately they have not been very unhelpful in this matter and have provided very little information making it difficult to plan. We are considering alternative recovery plans.
Update 01:00 GMT 19th April 2016
We have established a temporary Virtual Server in Microsoft Azure and have now re-established our basic website albeit without SSL. We have yet to recover the key services required to operate our online sitemap generator, but we have made good progress today.
We still have a long way to go and this is big emergency migration for a very small organisation with limited resources. We apologise for any inconvenience and ask that you bear with us.
Update 20:00 GMT 19th April 2016
We have now re-established our HTTPS / SSL certificate. Our original server remains unavailable.
Update 02:00 GMT 24th April 2016
Our original servers we're never recovered by 123-reg, however we are nearing a point where we are ready to go live again with our online sitemap generator. We should have more news in the next day or so.

How to publish your sitemap
Wednesday, 16 March 2016
We are often asked how to publish sitemap once it has been generated. In this FAQ we provide a quick overview of the process.1) Generate your sitemap
First you need to create your sitemap using a sitemap generator. We have a range of options to do this including our :
- Online sitemap generator for a quick sitemap with up to 2000 pages.
- WordPress sitemap generator plugin.
- Unlimited Windows sitemap generator
Once you've used one of these tools to create your sitemap, you'll need to publish it.
2) Upload your sitemap
Once you have created your sitemap you will need to upload it, usually to the root of your website.
Note : If you are using our Wordpress plugin you do not need to upload your sitemap as it is automatically created on your website for you.
There are a number of ways you can upload your siteamp depending on your website hosting package. For example you may use FTP or a file manager within your website control panel. You may need to consult your webmaster or hosting company for further details and support on how to manaully upload files.
Now that you have uploaded your sitemap you should check that your sitemap can be found using your web browser :
e.g. http://www.example.com/sitemap.xml
As well as publishing your sitemap it is a good idea to publish your robots.txt file. This helps search engines discover your sitemap. Again this should live in the root of your website.
e.g. http://www.example.com/robots.txt
3) Notifying search engines
Once you have uploaded your sitemap it is a good idea to let search engines know about it rather than just wait for it to be discovered. You should add your sitemap explicitly using webmaster tools :
- http://www.bing.com/toolbox/webmaster
Each search engine has a slightly different approach, but the principles are broadly similar:
- Register and verify your website following the instructions provided. This may involve adding a small snippet of code to your website.
- Register your sitemap by telling the search engine the URL for your sitemap.
- Once accepted and validated you can access a range of data about your website including search engine ranking and analytics.
4) Pinging
Pinging is also a way to notify search engines about your sitemap, however we recommend in the first instance you notify search engines using webmaster tools and then using pinging to notify of subsequent updates.
Note : If you use webmaster tools ping will only notify of updates, it will not automatically add your sitemap.
Once you have registered your sitemap you can use our ping feature to notify search engines of changes.

Sitemap generator updates
Wednesday, 24 February 2016
We've been fixing and patching a couple of issues over the last few weeks, here is a quick round up of issues that we've looked at :Online Sitemap Generator
When trying to spider certain secure websites a number of users experienced the error : "The request was aborted: Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel."
To resolve this issues we have added support for more HTTPS protocols including deprecated protocols.
Fix : some homepage redirects not being picked up resulting in no results including 303 and 307.
Fix : upper case characters in frequency
We also had a bit of a clear out to help improve performance.
G-Mapper Windows Sitemap Generator
Version 3.0 was a completely new product to align with our online sitemap generator. As a result we've had a number of issues to iron out. We're now on version 3.0.0.10.Now that we're using the same spider engine G-mapper also gets the HTTPS protocols and the same fixes as with the online version.
We also removed the registration process to make it quick and easier to get up and running.
Additionally G-Mapper had a number of specific issues :
Fix : File limit restriction
Fix : URL validation on settings page
Fix : Modified date default value on settings page
Fix : Error editing images
Fix : Settings URL validation / saving.

Sitemap Example
Monday, 1 February 2016
XML Sitemaps are similar to RSS feeds and use XML to represent the contents of your website in a structured format to give search engines hints about the content of your website .The Sitemap protocol is an open standard supported by the main search engines including Google, Yahoo and Microsoft Bing.
An XML Sitemap contains 4 basic elements for each page in your website, but can be extended to include more information :
- Url location
The full URL to the webpage. - Last modified date
When the page was last updated. - Change frequency
How often the page changes.
Never, Yearly, Monthly, Weekly, Daily, Hourly, Always - Page priority
A number 0.0, 0.1, 0.2 through to 1.0 to indicate the relative priority of pages within your website.
Example
A simple XML sitemap example would look like this :
<?xml encoding="UTF-8" version="1.0" ?>
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9">
<url>
<loc>http://www.g-mapper.co.uk/index.aspx</loc>
<lastmod>2010-10-01</lastmod>
<changefreq>daily</changefreq>
<priority>0.8</priority>
</url>
<url>
<loc>http://www.g-mapper.co.uk/about.aspx</loc>
<lastmod>2009-01-01</lastmod>
<changefreq>yearly</changefreq>
<priority>0.1</priority>
</url>
</urlset>
